    Side control

    Control them chest-to-chest and spot the far arm.

  2. 02

    Figure-four the arm

    Drive their far wrist to the mat, sit up slightly and thread your arm through to grip your own wrist.

  3. 03

    Rotate the shoulder

    Keep the elbow tight to their body and rotate their hand up toward their head to finish the shoulder lock.

Key details

  • Drive the wrist to the mat before threading the figure-four.
  • Keep their elbow pinned to their ribs as you rotate.
  • Block their far hip so they cannot turn and follow the arm.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbow drift away from the body.
  • Cranking the wrist without taking out the slack.
  • Letting them turn toward you to relieve the shoulder.
