Build to your feet with hand control, clear the hips and turn in to escape to neutral. Also known as the Standup escape. Here is the exact breakdown from the DARCE app: 3 steps, the details that make it work, and the mistakes to avoid.

## When to use it

Use the stand-up from the bottom of referee’s position or any time you are on all fours with someone riding you. Control their hands at your waist before you rise. It works best right at the start, before they settle their weight.

## Step by step

1. 01

   ### Referee’s position, bottom

On all fours with the opponent riding your back.

2. 02

   ### Build a base & stand

Bring a foot up, control their hands at your waist and stand up explosively while keeping your hips back.

3. 03

   ### Clear the hips & face

Peel their hands off, clear your hips and turn in to face them, escaping to neutral.

## Key details

- Control their hands before you stand or they ride you back down.
- Keep your hips back and chest up as you rise.
- Turn in toward them the instant your hips are free.

## Common mistakes

- Standing before clearing the hands.
- Leaning forward and getting tripped back down.
- Forgetting to turn and face after the escape.

## Common counters

Opponents drop their hips and lift you back to the mat, trip your leg as you rise, or chase your hips. Control their hands and keep your hips back.

## How to drill it

From bottom referee’s position, stand up against a partner who rides with light resistance, ten reps, hand-fighting their grip at your waist each time. Then do three rounds of thirty seconds against full resistance, starting on your partner’s call.
