- 3 steps

Off-balance the opponent and reap their leg from the outside to trip them onto their back. Also known as the Foot sweep or the Osoto gari. Here is the exact breakdown from the DARCE app: 3 steps, the details that make it work, and the mistakes to avoid.

## When to use it

Use the outside trip when the opponent leans back or settles their weight onto the heels. Pull them toward you so they pull back, then drive them onto their heels and reap. It works from an underhook or an over-under clinch.

## Step by step

1. 01

   ### Clinch up

Control the head and an arm at close range.

2. 02

   ### Step in & reap

Break their balance backward, step your lead foot beside theirs and swing your rear leg behind their leg to reap it out.

3. 03

   ### Drive through & finish

Turn the corner, drive your weight through them and come up in top position.

## Key details

- Break their balance onto the heel before you reap.
- Drive the head and chest forward as the leg sweeps back.
- Reap with the back of the thigh, not just the foot.

## Common mistakes

- Reaping before breaking their balance.
- Reaching with the leg while staying upright.
- Letting go of the upper-body control during the trip.

## Common counters

Opponents step the reaped leg back, square their hips, or answer with a trip of their own. Reaping before their balance breaks does nothing. Break the balance first.

## How to drill it

In an over-under clinch, push your partner back onto their heels and reap the leg, ten reps on each side. Then work three rounds of two minutes of clinch where you look for the trip.
