# Hip Toss

- Wrestling
- Takedowns
- intermediate
- Clinch / over-tie
- 3 steps

Turn in, load the opponent over your hip and throw them to the mat. Also known as the Hip throw or the O goshi. Here is the exact breakdown from the DARCE app: 3 steps, the details that make it work, and the mistakes to avoid.

## When to use it

Use the hip toss when the opponent clinches and leans their weight forward, or presses into you with an overhook. Bring them forward with the head and arm control first. It works best when their hips are higher than yours.

## Step by step

1. 01

   ### Clinch up

Secure an over-hook or head-and-arm tie at close range.

2. 02

   ### Turn the hip in

Step across and turn your back into them, getting your hip below theirs while controlling the head/arm.

3. 03

   ### Drive through & finish

Turn the corner, drive your weight through them and come up in top position.

## Key details

- Get your hip lower than theirs before you turn.
- Keep tight control of the head or arm so they travel with you.
- Bend the knees and lift with the legs, then rotate them over.

## Common mistakes

- Turning in with the hip too high to load them.
- Losing the head/arm control mid-throw.
- Reaching back for them instead of getting your hips in first.

## Common counters

Opponents drop their hips, block your hip with their free hand, or step around you as you turn. Turning in without control gives up your back. Keep the head and arm tight and get your hips low first.

## How to drill it

Turn in and load your partner onto your hip without throwing, three sets of ten, checking that your hips sit below theirs every time. Then add the throw onto a crash mat, three sets of five, keeping the head and arm control until they land.
