Invert and roll over your shoulder, away from the opponent, to come up free or behind them. Also known as the Shoulder roll. Here is the exact breakdown from the DARCE app: 3 steps, the details that make it work, and the mistakes to avoid.

## When to use it

Use the granby roll from the bottom when the opponent rides forward and heavy. Time it as their weight shifts over you. It also gets you out of a front headlock or a scramble.

## Step by step

1. 01

   ### Referee’s position, bottom

On all fours, ready to invert.

2. 02

   ### Roll over the shoulder

Tuck your head, lift the hips and roll over one shoulder away from them, keeping your hips moving.

3. 03

   ### Come up free

Continue the roll all the way through to come up on your feet, escaped or behind them.

## Key details

- Tuck the head and roll over the shoulder, not the neck.
- Keep the hips light and moving through the whole roll.
- Time it when their weight shifts forward over you.

## Common mistakes

- Rolling onto the head/neck instead of the shoulder.
- Stalling halfway and getting flattened.
- Rolling into their pressure instead of away.

## Common counters

Opponents follow the roll and stay on your back, or flatten you halfway through it while your hips are up. A roll into their pressure lands you under them again. Roll away from their weight, keep your hips moving and finish the roll.

## How to drill it

Solo granby rolls along the mat, three sets of ten on each side, rolling over the shoulder and never the neck. Then roll from bottom referee’s position against light resistance, three rounds of thirty seconds.
