Trap an arm and the same-side leg, bridge over your shoulder and roll the opponent into your guard. Also known as the Bridge & roll or the Upa. Here is the exact breakdown from the DARCE app: 3 steps, the details that make it work, and the mistakes to avoid.

## When to use it

Use the upa as soon as the opponent settles into mount, before they climb high or isolate an arm. It works best when they post a hand on the mat or reach for your neck, because that arm is easy to trap. Trap the arm and the same-side foot first, then bridge.

## Step by step

1. 01

   ### Mounted on the bottom

They are mounted on you. Protect your neck and frame.

2. 02

   ### Trap the arm & leg, bridge

Trap one of their arms to your chest and their foot on that same side, then bridge your hips up and over your shoulder.

3. 03

   ### Roll up into their guard

Roll them over the trapped side and come up settled inside their guard, on top.

## Key details

- Trap BOTH the arm and the foot on the same side or the roll fails.
- Bridge over your shoulder, not straight up.
- Follow the roll all the way up into their guard.

## Common mistakes

- Bridging without trapping the arm and leg.
- Rolling straight back instead of over the shoulder.
- Leaving the neck exposed during the bridge.

## Common counters

Opponents widen their knees, post the free hand on the mat, or sit back to kill the bridge. Some climb to high mount where the bridge has no effect. If the roll stalls, switch to the elbow-knee escape on the side they posted.

## How to drill it

Your partner mounts you with light weight: trap the arm and foot, bridge over the shoulder and land in their guard, ten reps on each side. Then do three rounds of one minute where your partner tries to post and you switch to the elbow-knee escape.
